Survey shows Canadian Alliance poll momentum is snowballing

Liberal chances sliding toward oblivion in newspaper reporting

TORONTO • A groundbreaking new survey concludes that a massive upheaval is underway in the Canadian political polling landscape. The scientific study reveals that Canadian Alliance now has an almost insurmountable momentum in front-page newspaper poll analysis.

The comprehensive nation-wide survey by the polling firm Cook & Ing Results Research Ltd. sampled a cross-section of major Canadian city's newspapers. The one-sided results were surprising even to the poll's authors.

"We expected a more balanced outcome, but poll reporting overwhelmingly concluded that support for the Canadian Alliance is surging toward victory and the Liberals are in deep trouble," said pollster Dayta Cook.

"Even more amazing was the unstoppable momentum attributed to the Alliance, considering that their recent 2% gains are within the polls' margin of error," noted Cook.

Cook and his co-authors were also impressed by the nearly universal prediction that the Liberals are headed for a minority government, when they actually have twice the voter support of the next highest party, the Alliance.

"Lay people not trained in the sophisticated science of polling, might jump to the wrong conclusions when confronted with a statistically insignificant increase in Alliance support despite wall-to-wall media coverage of the party's leadership campaign," explained Cook.

But-- according to Cook's findings-- polling professionals, such as Frank Graves, president of Ekos Research Associates, can see through the confusing numbers and confidently predict in the National Post that the Liberal's 24% lead "is not going to get them a majority -- that's for damn sure."

Alliance strategists say that despite Stockwell Day's staunch anti-science faith that the world was created in seven days, he has become a fervent believer in front page newspaper polls.

The survey is accurate for 88 out of 106 Canadian daily newspapers that are owned by the big five media billionaires.
